Therefore, it is crucial to know how to act during an earthquake to minimize the risk of injury or death. Here are some tips on how to save your life during an earthquake:  Drop, Cover, and Hold On : If you are indoors, drop to the ground, take cover under a desk or table, and hold on to it tightly.   Why should people in the eastern United States be concerned about earthquakes? 1) Severe earthquakes have occurred in the eastern U.S.: In November of 1755, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.0 and a maximum intensity of VIII occurred about 50 miles northeast of Boston, Massachusetts. Boston was heavily damaged. Other strong earthquakes recorded in the continental US were centered in southeastern Missouri near the border with Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee.  In the winter of 1811-1812, a series of three powerful earthquakes of magnitudes about 7.0 to 7.8 and hundreds of aftershocks occurred near New Madrid, Missouri. These shocks were so strong that observers reported that the land distorted into visible rolling waves.   Next Tuesday is Valentine’s Day, which many love birds might celebrate with flowers, Champagne and, of course, chocolate galore. Which got me thinking: When did Valentine’s Day become a chocolate-flavored holiday? Why not vanilla, caramel or hot peppers? It’s probably all because of Richard Cadbury, who started marketing heart-shaped, Cupid-bedecked boxes of chocolate bonbons for Valentine’s Day back in the 1860s.  The tradition stuck . Homemade fudgy treats, though, do make for a more intimate display of affection. Yossi Arefi has three new chocolate desserts that, like relationships,  she writes , can range in commitment.
